Tempel Steel Company on Wolcott Avenue. At the turn of the century, Tempel Steel could rightfully proclaim itself “the largest producer of magnetic steel laminations for the electronic and electrical industries for use in motors, ballasts and transformers.” The 55 year-old manufacturer, a hold-over from Chicago’s more industrial age, still employed some 1,500 workers in factories in Chicago, Mexico, and Canada as of 2000. ©Alison McKinzie / CITY 2000
